What: Monitoring phenology along the growing season on a large scale is crucial for all actors of the agri-food chain (farmers, agri-food industry, insurance companies, public administration and policy makers) but is still challenging. Different possibilities to improve the assessment of agricultural crop phenology can be identified and this webinar we will discuss some ways of addressing these challenges. The complementary use of different sources of time-series data (remote sensing, ground truth data,...etc .), modern algorithms/methods and computing resources to analyse it, allows a near real time (NRT) monitoring of crop phenological events for all actors in the agri-food chain. The use of radar data (S1 and possibly S3 images) could provide valuable information on crop phenology over areas often covered by the clouds. Availability of «new» sources of geo-located data sets (meteorological, dash-cams, etc ..) allows to enlarge ground truth sample to calibrate and validate the proposed algorithms. Deep learning algorithms designed for time-series analysis used on high power computing systems, allows to improve the monitoring of phenological events in agriculture.
Why: Availability of Copernicus data. Processing large amounts of image data such as those provided by Copernicus is a computationally demanding task. Computing capabilities have considerably increased over the last years so as allowing the processing with complex algorithms of these data.

Cozmin LUCAU DANILA graduated from the University “Stefan cel Mare” Suceava (RO) at Faculty of Forestry in 1995 with an Ing. degree (eq. to MSc) and PhD in Geomatics from, Catholic University of Louvain (BE) in 2008. In 2017 Cozmin joined the Geomatic team of Walloon Agricultural Research Centre in Gembloux (BE) working in different research project: SAGRIWASENT, EO4AGRI, CARTOFOR. He has worked for 7 years (2009-2016) in MARS unit of EU Joint Research Centre (IT) in different topics linked to the EU Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). He has experience in SAR remote sensing, GIS, crop growth modelling and CAP monitoring.

Sophie Bontemps, Senior Scientist and Project Manager at UCLouvain. She graduated as a bio-engineer in land use planning from UCLouvain in 2004 and she completed her PhD in 2010 in the same university. Her PhD was on the development of LC change detection using high temporal resolution time series at the continental scales. In the meantime, she was actively involved in the ESA DUE GlobCover and GlobCorine (2005 and 2009) projects for the development of the LC mapping component, as well as in the ESA CCI-LandCover project both for LC classification and product validation. She was / is acting as Project Manager in the ESA Sen2-Agri, Sen4CAP and Sen4Stat project, while being also involved in the methods development and validation and in the federation and involvement of the corresponding user communities.

Bente Lilja Bye has been a member of the GEO community since 2004, engaged both as representative in the GEO plenary, in committees and contributing to the GEO Work Programme, and currently represents Norway on the GEO Programme Board. Bente runs a small research and consultancy company, BLB, focusing on transforming Earth observation data to information and knowledge for societal benefit. She is responsible for Communication, Dissemination and Assessment as partner in NextGEOSS.
